1.The qualities of a good leader is one of the play's important themes. To explore this theme, students can do one or more of the following:
• Discuss the qualities possessed by a good leader. Generate a list of these qualities
-honest
-outgoing, friendly
-able to take control
-people's person
-serious
-task oriented
-Obama
-laudable
-intelligent
-reliable
-spokesmen
-interesting
• Make a list of the leadership qualities that the class feels are legitimate. Compare and contrast the two lists and compile one list of leadership qualities that the class feels a good leader should have. Prioritize the list.
-task oriented
-honest(actions)
-outgoing/friendly(charismatic)
-able to take control
-serious
-reliable
-people first
-foreign policy
-equality for all~equal treatment
-out of the box
-intelligent
-thinks before acting
-prioritize issues
2. Friendship is another major theme in the play. Explore this theme by answering the following questions:
• How far would you go to stop a friend from harming your country?
The farthest I would go to make a friend stop from harming my country is to put them in jail, I would not want to hurt then at all, and is they were in jail then it would give them time to reflect upon why they want to harm our country.
• How far would you go to obtain revenge on someone or some group who destroyed your best friend?
I would obtain revenge by paying someone else to black mail them or something to destroy them, because friends are basically like family if they are your best friend and they would do the same for me, but I would not obtain revenge by killing someone just give them a bad reputation, also not have them so popular to other people.
• Is there anything for which you would betray a friend?
There really is nothing to me that I would do to betray a friend, I am not the type of person that would go and do something screwed up to a friend, plus I'm grateful for the friends I have, so there is really no reason to do that.
• Which is more important to you, friendship or personal principles? Why?
I would say friendships, because friends are always going to be there for you and your already friends with some people who do not have the same principles as you anyways.
3. One of the most sensitive issues in the play is suicide. Research attitudes toward suicide held by the following cultures: ancient Roman, modern Japanese, and modern American. Compare and contrast these attitudes in class presentations or in written essays.
The three cultures all share the fact that people commit suicide in honor. But ancient Roman and modern Japanese are more similar then modern American. Modern Japanese called it Seppuku, it was a privilege for then to commit suicide so that they can keep their honor and nobility among the other samurai. Ancient Romans did it because it was humiliating for someone to execute you to them and that it was better to kill yourself to keep your honor. But in modern American, since we are influenced by different cultures it is confusing why some commit suicide. Some do it not in honor but because they feel they are alone sad and depressed with their life. They also began to question their existence on Earth there fore committing suicide because they do not think they are important enough.
4. The role of fate and superstition is another theme.
• To what extent can we control the future?
The choices we make in the present are as far as we can to control the future, there is really is no other way we can control it, but by making good choices now means that we are making a good future.
• How superstitious are you? Do you have any good luck rituals that you perform before important occasions?
I would say I am some what superstitious, because all this little myths or stories I have heard about the Filipino culture, such as not to have your wedding in the same year as a relative or else your will have bad luck, and not to take pictures in a group of three people or else that will cause bad luck, but every time I go to a party I have jade jewelry with me for luck so nothing bad happens.
• Do you watch for omens before important events?
Nope not really, except to bring a jacket if it is cold or if it rains.
• Do you read your horoscope every day, and do you follow its advice?
Sometimes not all the time, I don't follow the advice much cause to me they aren't really based on actually things or events.
